Synopsis

On 9 October 1986, nine-year-olds Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway were murdered in woodland near Brighton. Their killer, a local man known to both families, would not be brought to justice for over thirty years.

Veteran crime reporter Paul Cheston, writing with the cooperation of the Fellows family, traces the full thirty-year saga: a flawed initial trial, a shattering acquittal, and the decades-long campaign that finally led to a conviction and, at last, some measure of closure for two families who never stopped fighting for their daughters.

Sensitively told and thoroughly researched, The Babes in the Woods Murders is as much about the families' endurance as it is about the case itself — a story of betrayal, resilience, and justice delayed but not denied.

Narration Notes

Given the subject matter, the approach here is restrained rather than dramatic — Karl keeps the focus on the families at the heart of the story, with a steady, compassionate delivery that gives the material the respect it demands.
