Synopsis
Lenny McLean was born in East London in 1949. He survived a violent childhood and spells in borstal, and became the most feared bare-knuckle fighter of his generation. Late in life he found a new audience on screen in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, just as his autobiography topped the bestseller lists. He died in 1998.
Peter Gerrard's book returns to Lenny's life through the voices of the people around him. It is a portrait of the man behind the legend and of the East End that made him.
Narration Notes
Lenny's original autobiography was recorded on tape in conversation with Peter Gerrard, who then wrote it up. The tapes were later lost, but the transcripts survived. This production sets out to recreate the spirit of those sessions, with Karl as Lenny alongside Annie Aldington and David John. Sound effects mark the tape being switched on, and mic technique follows Lenny moving around the room. The cast recorded in their own studios, so Karl's lines had to play off dialogue recorded separately. Karl also narrated The Guv'nor, which won the One Voice Award for Best Performance – Factual.
