Synopsis
On the morning of 22 January 1993, Securicor guard Eddie Maher drove away with £1.2 million in cash and disappeared. With every port on alert, he still got out of the country. For the next two decades he lived in the United States under a string of false names, while British police, the FBI and Interpol searched for him.
Told in full for the first time, in his own words, this is the story of how an ordinary man became Britain's most wanted, and how a betrayal finally ended twenty years on the run.
Narration Notes
On the face of it, the ideal crime: seemingly victimless. But Eddie was an ordinary Joe who claimed he acted under duress, and therein lies the conundrum: did he or didn't he? His twenty years on the run hint at someone far more resourceful than he lets on. Karl chose not to answer that question for the listener, but to let them decide, playing it as a slice of old-school caper from a bygone time, with just enough of the "good on yer!"
