Synopsis
“Guy Stanton” was never a real person. He was the cover identity of an officer in Beta Projects, a secret HM Customs unit set up to put officers inside the international drugs trade for as long as it took. As Stanton, he did business with heroin suppliers, cartel fixers and British smuggling crews, and he was always one mistake away from being found out.
Written with crime author Peter Walsh, The Betrayer is the inside account of that double life: how the cover was built, how it was kept up under pressure, and what it cost the man behind it. It is the book that inspired the Netflix series Legends.
Narration Notes
Effectively a three-person job: the straightforward narrator, Guy speaking in the first person about what he lived through, and the alter ego he was playing. Karl worked to capture Guy's terminology and rhythm, checked every acronym and the many foreign place and people names, and aimed to give each scene a real sense of place, so the listener feels the tension as it happens.
